ATHOL — Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol invites the public to come learn about becoming a volunteer tutor for adults on Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 5-7 p.m., at Athol Public Library, 568 Main St., A second informational meeting will be held Monday, Dec. 17, 5-7 p.m. Attendance at one of these sessions serves as one's ticket to take the Adult Basic Literacy Tutor Training course beginning Jan. 8 and continuing on Jan. 10, 15, 17, 22 & 24 (storm dates if needed -Jan. 29, 31) There will be two more informational meetings on Jan. 7, 3-5 p.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. People interested in taking the training must attend one of the four meetings.
This free Tutor Training Course in basic literacy for volunteers to tutor adult learners one-on-one will be taught by Louise Doud, LVOA's coordinator. People who complete the 18-hour course will be eligible to tutor one adult learner in basic reading and writing skills. Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol provides free, private, and confidential tutoring to adults and youth ages 16 and older in basic reading and writing, and in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), through the use of professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors. Students are able to learn at their own pace and in the best way for them. In addition to individualized tutoring, LVOA provides supplemental services such as Books for Babies, a program to distribute children's books to parents, encourage reading to infants and increase awareness of LVOA's services. LVOA is an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts.
