Catherine King: Real Americans

I feel compelled to respond to the Oct. 11 letter to the editor ”Real Americans’ will be voting for Trump.”

First, I’m afraid some of the letter’s “facts” are off, and suggest the writer research further, rather than just take the word of his chosen candidate. The writer is entitled to his opinions as an American, but not entitled to change facts. But mostly, I’m afraid that the writer has been sorely misled.

It would be more accurate to say that “real Americans” vote for their candidate of choice. That theory lies at the core of living in a democracy. There are plenty of real Americans who are choosing to vote for the other candidate, and some choosing not to vote at all. This does not change their citizenship. The letter writer’s stance only weakens his candidate and his supporters.

“One nation, indivisible.” Remember that? There is no “them.” It is only us. We are all Americans. And, unless the writer’s ancestors were Indigenous to the Americas 300 years ago, he, too, come from a heritage of immigrants.

For myself, I would rather support a candidate who promises to serve all Americans, not just the ones who like them. But that’s my choice as a real American. I wish the letter writer luck, and peace with himself on your choices. From one real American to another.
