While I understand the need to replace the water main below Main Street in Greenfield and the importance of updating the infrastructure of our city, officials have really dropped the ball on this one. By leaving a gravel strip exposed on the westbound side of the street, they have created a most unfortunate situation.

The impact on businesses and downtown environment has been dire, indeed. I can’t imagine the air quality levels are in any way safe for anyone’s respiratory system, and the amount of debris settling on sidewalks and stores is unforgivable. It was noteworthy that the road was watered down for the fair parade but no other time.

I would expect the city to do better for the businesses who struggle even in the best of times. It’s very disappointing to see it isn’t a priority of our city officials.
