James Perkins: Can we figure out how to change our ways?

It is time. It is an opportunity moment in the life history of planet Earth. Earth has furnished herself with myriad flowers and beasts, and then humans, who have run amok. Can we extraordinary creatures figure out how to change our ways of living so that life as we know and love it, can continue? What needs to happen in order for our grandchildren to have a chance to live in this wondrous home for life.

Leadership for this movement to defend life on Earth will fall on the shoulders of all of us. We need to take responsibility for what we know and do. There is very little we can do by ourselves. We need our friends, neighbors, and co-workers. We must work within the old, worn out systems of government and economy, saving what we can, of our beautiful places, as we build new systems based on love and cooperation to replace our present system with its basis in fear and competition.

It is a time in our human story that calls for energy, optimism, heroism as we learn to find our place in the struggle. Hard times are coming. Great adaptability will be required of us. Spiritual energy is there to support us. Each of us will imagine her own more just and beautiful world. If we can rally to defeat the forces of death in our midst, that world of our collective imaginings will emerge, and the course of history of humankind will change character in a beautiful way.
