PC Doctor: How to change your Zoom photo

Dear PC Doctor:

Like everyone else, I’m attending a lot of online conference calls lately. Sometimes, there are a few in a row and I don’t get a chance to have lunch. Is there a way to use a stationary photo of myself instead of live video so that I can sneak a snack during my meetings without everyone seeing me chew? (Most of my meetings are using Zoom.)

—Thanks, Hungry

Dear Hungry:

I feel your pain.

In Zoom, to visually hide from your meeting co-attendees, turn off your camera. To do this, look on the bottom left of your screen. You should see a video camera icon. Underneath the icon, you should see the words “Stop Video.” Click on it. It will change to an icon of a video camera with a line through it and the words “Start Video” below the icon. You will appear as a black box showing your user name.

If you would rather have a stationary photo of yourself appear when your camera is off, do the following: Log into your account when you don’t have a meeting. Look in the upper right-hand side of the screen. Click on the picture of a cog. Look for “Profile” in the menu on the left. Click “Profile.” Then, click in the box that appears above your name. In the box that then appears, choose “Change Picture.” You will see the option to upload a photo of yourself. Voila! The next time you are in a meeting and turn off your camera, people will see your photo instead. (Remember to also mute your microphone if you’re eating something noisy.)

I hope this helps.

Until next time, Happy Computing!
