High schools: Mahar wrestling takes down Granby in regular-season finale

ORANGE — The Mahar wrestling team closed out its regular season with a 54-24 win over Granby High School on Tuesday night.

The Senators honored seniors Adam Clement, Justin diDeigo, Ed Bennington and manager Kassidy Thompson before the match.

Both Clement and deDeigo notched victories in their final regular-season matches for Mahar.

DeDeigo pinned Granby’s Abram Speek in 54 seconds at 138 pounds, while Clement pinned Gavin Gilburg in 1:31 in the 145-pound weight class.

Mahar will wrestle in the Central Massachusetts tournament on Saturday in Wayland. The seed meeting for the tournament is on Thursday night.

Mahar benefited from several forfeits in the middle to upper weight classes in the win over the Rams.

Jonathan Mahony picked up a win over Jacob Benson at 113 pounds, getting a pin at 2:52.

Luke Chiodo had another win for the Senators at 126 pounds. It took Chiodo 37 seconds to pin Mason Olivera.

Boys basketball

Greenfield 62, Athol 37 — The Red Raiders could not stay with the Green Wave in the second half in a road loss.

Greenfield had a 25-17 lead at halftime before pulling away.

Mark Ferrari scored 15 points to lead Athol (2-13, 0-5 Hampshire North). Brymere Edwards had eight points while Keegan Lutz and Maysin Tarbell both scored four.

Owen Phelps had 11 points for Greenfield (8-7, 3-2).

Hopkins Academy 58, Mahar 54 — Dealing with a press the whole game, the Senators could not get in a rhythm on offense in a road loss to the Golden Hawks.

Mahar (12-5, 3-3 Hampshire South) got 16 points from Charlie Barnes and 12 from Matt Lyesiuk.

Jake Tenney had six points and nine rebounds for the Senators.

Hopkins sharpshooter Andrew Ciaglo burned the Senators with 32 points and six 3-pointers.

The Golden Hawks (8-8, 2-3) got another 19 points from Caleb Graves, who was 14 of 15 from the line.

Mahar led 35-28 at halftime.
