ATHOL — A flurry of forfeits gave the Athol wrestling team a 58-12 win over Mohawk on Wednesday night.

Before anyone got on the mat, the Red Raiders had a 24-0 lead.

Chris Waslaske was the beneficiary of a forfeit at 182 pounds.

“I knew I didn’t have a match,” Waslaske said. “It’s a bummer because you always look to get on the mat whenever possible. Even if it’s a wide body. You need experience.”

Waslaske, who moved to 20-0 on the season, took the opportunity to help out some of the younger wrestlers on the team.

“I love teaching the younger kids and helping them out,” Waslaske said.

Caleb Cox returned to the mat after some time off to rest his knee that he injured during the Thanksgiving Day football game.

Cox won his match at 145 pounds against Mohawk’s Jaden Moore by technical fall, 20-5.

“It’s just heavier on my knee,” Cox said. “I have to wear a knee brace with another knee brace over it.”

Cox needed an injury timeout when he tweaked the knee during his match, but he had total control throughout.

Joey Gray (160) got another thorough win on the mat for the Red Raiders, winning by technical fall over Dylan Wooldridge, 16-1.

I thought both Joey (Gray) and Caleb (Cox) wrestled very well,” Athol coach Brandon Jeffrey said. “Especially Caleb coming off his injury.”

Athol’s John Hicks pinned Will VanVleet in 3 minutes, 29 seconds.

Athol goes to Quabbin Regional for a duel meet on Saturday.

Franklin Tech 42, Mahar 30 — The Senators fell against the Eagles in Turners Falls.

Jeff Kidwell (106 pounds) and Domanic Cacciolfi (113 pounds) had wins by fall for Mahar.

The Senators three other wins were by forfeit.
