HS Roundup: Naomi Den Ouden’s goal lifts Mohawk Trial field hockey past Mahar, 1-0

The Mohawk Trail field hockey team secured its second win of the season on Friday. 

Hosting Mahar, goals were at a premium as both defenses locked in to make life difficult for the opposing offense. Warrior Naomi Den Ouden lit up the scoreboard, however, and the Senators were unable to answer, as Mohawk Trail walked away with a 1-0 victory in Buckland. 

Redyn Gutierrez stopped all six shots she faced in goal for the Warriors. 

Amherst 2, Franklin Tech 1 — Abi Dobias scored the Eagles’ lone goal in a loss to the Hurricanes in Amherst Friday. 

Madison Markwell made two saves for Franklin Tech. 

Girls soccer

Frontier 3, Holyoke 1 — Skyler Steele found the back of the net twice and added an assist as the Redhawks pulled away with a victory over the Purple Knights Friday. 

Maddie Fagan scored and had an assist while Aylen Shaw made six saves in the triumph. 

Greenfield 2, Gateway 0 — Elderina Cecunjanin and Zephyr Jetzon each scored in the second half to lift the Green Wave to a victory in Greenfield Friday.

Jetzon added an assist while Annie Cobileanschi made four saves in the win. 

Pioneer 2, Renaissance 0 — A pair of goals from Natalie Rios improved the Panthers to 6-2-2 on the season following a victory in Springfield Friday. 

Dzelila Cecunjanins dished an assist while the Pioneer defense did not allow a shot on goal.

Boys soccer

Franklin Tech 5, St. Mary’s 2 — The Eagles erupted for five goals in the first half to earn their first win of the season, knocking off the Saints in Turners on Thursday. 

Mason Thurston, Jaxon Kottwright-Clark (2), Cody Yetter and Jonathan Georgitha scored for Franklin Tech to give it a 5-0 lead at the intermission. Kottwright-Clark, Carter Leete and Georgitha provided the assists in the victory. 

Field hockey

Frontier 1, Minnechaug 1 — Kyra Richards made 14 saves, giving her 100 career saves, as the Redhawks tied the Falcons in Wilbraham Thursday. 

Harper Modestow scored off an assist from Ashley Taylor for Frontier. 

Volleyball

Mohawk Trail 3, Mahar 1 — Turin Gurganis put down four aces and two kills to go along with six digs while Madelynn Burgess tallied three aces, four digs and seven assists and Mia Santana had three kills in the Senators’ loss to the Warriors Thursday.
