H.S. Roundup: Mohawk Trail girls track knocks off Turners, Madi Liimatainen tosses 500th strikeout (PHOTOS)

Emily Sisum, Sofiya Slocik-Gritzner and Zephyr Jetzon each had a big day for the Mohawk Trail girls track team on Thursday against Turners. 

Sisum won the triple jump (31 feet, four inches) and the 400 hurdles (75.9 seconds), Slocik-Gritzner took the shot put (23-11.5) and the discus (76-0) while Jetzon came in first in the 100 (13.6) and 200 (29.0) to lift the Warriors to a 120-16 victory over the Thunder. 

Rounding out the Mohawk Trail winners were Irelyn Marcoux in the long jump (14-2.25), Natalie Lanoue in the high jump (4-2), Savvannah Simmons in the pole vault (6-6), Morgan Raffa in the javelin (90-9), Lily Jenks in the 100 hurdles (20.9), Virginia Krezmien in the mile (6:13.1), Cleome Gardner in the 400 (73.6) and Anya Reid in the 800 (2:43.6). The Warriors won the 4x100 (55.6) and 4x400 (5:03) relays. 

Raygan Pendriss was the lone Turners winner, taking first in the 2 mile (14:16.3). 

Boys track 

Franklin Tech 75, Mohawk Trail 70 — The Eagles were able to win the 4x100 (46.9) and 4x400 (4:05) relays to secure a win over the Warriors in Buckland on Thursday. 

Josiah Little won the long jump (19-3.5), Owen LaValley took the pole vault (9-0), Athli Gonzalez came in first in the discus (97-8) while Cam Candelaria took the 100 (11.8) and 200 (24.6) for Franklin Tech. 

Mohawk Trail winners were Chay Mojallali in the triple jump (39-2), the high jump (5-8) and the 110 hurdles (18.2), Will VanVleet in the shot put (36-10), Vincent Gauthier in the javelin (112-9), Peter Healy in the mile (5:07.6), Emerson Spence in the 400 (57.7), Mohamed Abdelgawad in the 400 hurdles (79.5) and Emmett Johnson in the 800 (2:23.7) and the 2 mile (11:53.8). 

Softball

Turners 18, Mount Greylock 8 — It’s not often that a pitcher hits 500 strikeouts in their high school career.

Madi Liimatainen has done it before her sophomore season has ended. 

Liimatainen needed just one strikeout to hit the milestone on Thursday and got that and more, striking out 12 to blow past the mark. She added a home run, a single and two RBIs at the plate to lead the Thunder to a Franklin County League West win in Williamstown. 

“It’s very impressive,” Turners coach Gary Mullins said of his ace. “We can’t raise the bar any higher.” 

Holly Myers also homered, singled and drove in two runs for the Thunder. Mia Marigliano blasted three triples, a single and drove in two runs, Cadi Wozniak had three hits and four RBIs, Marilyn Ararua cracked two doubles, Janelle Massey finished with two hits while Morgan Dobias had a hit and an RBI in the winning effort. 

Athol 24, Hampden Charter 5 — Jenna Bonenfant doubled, tripled and brought in four runs to help lift the Bears to an independent win on Friday. 

Allison Robertson had four hits, one a triple, to bring in two runs, Giana Vaillancourt had three hits including a double and tallied three RBIs, Tapanga Chapalonis doubled, singled twice and brought in three runs while Kahlen Gregory doubled to knock in two runs for Athol. 

Smith Academy 10, Mahar 6 — Bella Malo cracked a pair of hits and knocked in a run for the Senators in a Franklin County League East loss to the Falcons on Thursday in Hatfield. 

Hayden Comeau added a hit for Mahar. 

Baseball

Mahar 12, Franklin Tech 2 (6) — It was two big innings that propelled the Sens on Thursday, as they scored four in the third and exploded for eight runs in the sixth to close things out with a six-inning Bi-County League North win over the Eagles in Orange. 

Will Barnes cracked two hits, one a double, and drove in three runs for Mahar. Lucas Isrow singled, tripled and brought in a run, Jeremy Vezina had a hit and drove in a pair of runs, Morgan Softic knocked two hits and tallied an RBI, Sam Connors, Nate Danielson and Jayden Delgado each finished with a hit while Milo Troisi and David Vitello each brought in a run in the victory.

Matt Vitello got the win on the mound, tossing all six innings and striking out four while limiting Tech to four hits. 

Ty Sadoski had an RBI double while Ryan Demers, Gavin Crossman and Mason Lehtomaki each had a hit for the Eagles. 

Pioneer 22, Mohawk Trail 0 (5) — Ben Werner held the Warriors to just one hit as the Panthers pulled away with a five-inning Bi-County League North victory in Buckland on Thursday. 

Ian Simpson cracked three hits, two of them doubles, and brought in four runs for Pioneer. Braeden Tsipenyuk doubled, singled and drove in a run, Peter Loud had a double, a triple and knocked in a run, Luc Belhumeur doubled, singled and brought in four runs, Hugh Cyhowski doubled to score two runs, Werner and Evan Tsipenyuk each had a hit and two RBIs while Heath Gomez, Noah Gamache and Ethan Mauthe each had a hit and an RBI in the win. 

 Jackson Lilienthal had the lone hit for Mohawk Trail. 

Turners 15, Smith Academy 4 — Tied at three going into the fourth the Thunder erupted for nine runs to take command, leading to a Bi-County League North win in Hatfield Thursday. 

Turners totaled 16 hits in the game. Alex Quezada led the way with a double, a triple and brought in three runs, Joey Mosca doubled, tallied two singles and knocked in four runs while Levin Prondecki homered, singled and had two RBIs in the win. 

Jackson Cogwell tripled and brought in three runs, Dylan Shinall had two hits and an RBI, Deven Sloan knocked two hits while Jake Lavin, Cam Burnett and Kainen Stevens each hit safely for the Thunder. Mosca got the win on the mound, striking out six in six innings work. 

Boys tennis

Frontier 5, Chicopee Comp 0 — Miles Keefe took No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0), Jacob Han won in No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Robert Fuqua earned a win in No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0) to lift the Redhawks to a win over the Colts on Thursday in South Deerfield. 

Oliver Brown and Harry Wright walked away with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 1 doubles while Ben Desmond and Brayden Reipold earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 2 doubles for Frontier. 

West Springfield 5, Turners 0 — Noah Kolodziej had the top match for the Thunder, falling 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles in a road loss to the Terriers on Thursday. 

Girls tennis

Greenfield 3, Turners 2 — Kaitlyn Collins walked away with a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 1 singles against Steph Peterson, Isabella Semonelli earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles over Olivia Walbach while Lily Duong and Amy Mihailicenco walked away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in No. 2 doubles over Sam Carr and Holly Hicks as the Green Wave defeated the Thunder in Turners on Thursday. 

Turners’ Miria Labelle walked away with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Mireb Gheorghita in No. 2 singles. The top match of the day came in No. 1 doubles, where Thunder Jill Reynolds and Avery Heathwaite pulled off a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 12-10 comeback win against Lydia Wood and Jessica Mihailicenco. 

Late Wednesday results

Eve Macek scored four times and dished two assists while Eleanor Herbert and Linnea Macek each had a score and two assist in Four Rivers’ 13-4 win over Amherst in an ultimate contest on Wednesday.
