ATHOL — For the first time since the building was established in 1911, the Athol Area YMCA held its first fall women’s basketball league, which concluded Wednesday night.

Zachary Skinner, the sports and recreation director at the YMCA, started the league.

“I started here in the spring and had some women ask about a women’s league,” Skinner said. “So I looked into it more and messaged some people and friends, and there was more interest.”

The league had four teams and about 30 total players. One player was Eileen St. Jean, of Athol, who played for Hoopz.

“Finally having a women’s league to play in is awesome,” St. Jean said. “After so many years of not having anything in this area. It’s great. It was people from all over the place.”

St. Jean’s team lost to Team Winchedon in the finals, 72-46.

Point guard Angelina Marazzi led Team Winchedon with 21 points. Her play-making and outside shooting helped Team Winchedon jump out to a big early lead.

Marazzi plays at Fitchburg State.

Coretta Haley scored 15 points for Hoopz.
