ORANGE — Multiple crews from Franklin and Worcester counties responded to a structure fire on Horton Road Tuesday afternoon that left a small shed “completely destroyed.”
The fire, which was reported at 146 Horton Road by a mail carrier at around 2:30 p.m., spread from the shed to the nearby brush and one-story house, according to Fire Chief James Young. Both structures were unoccupied at the time.
“It did (external) damage to the main structure,” said Young, who estimated the shed to be about 100 square feet.
The cause of the fire is unknown, he said.
Fire departments from Athol, New Salem, Phillipston and Erving provided mutual aid due to the property’s distance from Eagleville Pond, Young explained. The firefighters trucked in water and provided additional manpower.
The fire was contained by 3 p.m., at which time crews were “mopping up” the area by monitoring for hotspots. No injuries to first responders were reported.
The Warwick Fire Department provided station coverage for the Orange Fire Department.
