ATHOL – The storms of last week which knocked out power to hundreds may be fading into memory, but some lingering effects remain.
At the Athol Public Library, the building’s elevator has been out of commission since staff came in last Wednesday morning, according to Library Director Jean Shaughnessy. She said that the repair company has told her a new motherboard needs to be installed, and it’s unknown when this will happen.
While they wait for repairs to be complete, staff are assisting those who would need to use the elevator by getting books from the second floor or making photocopies.
“It’s made us realize how much we use the elevator,” said Shaughnessy, adding that staff on the first floor are keeping an eye out for people who may need assistance.
According to Torry Dooley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Boston office, multiple rounds of storms hit the area from Greenfield to Athol last Tuesday evening, arriving just before 7:30 p.m. Dooley added that Orange Airport reported winds at 62 mph, the maximum that evening.
The storms moved from west to east, and Dooley said they produced “straight-line winds,” as opposed to those made by tornadoes. Although a tornado warning was issued, Dooley said that based on the weather data and reports from local emergency management agencies, no tornado was reported and a storm survey was not conducted.
The elevator at Royalston Town Hall is also not working, though this has not proven to be as serious of an issue, as the second floor is home to a large room used for Town Meeting. The building has a wheelchair ramp and is wheelchair-accessible.
At Athol Town Hall, some departments have experienced issues receiving or making phone calls since the storm, according to an announcement posted to the town’s web site.

“Please be patient as we work as quickly as possible with our phone service to correct the issues,” the statement reads. “If you are attempting to call a town worker or are awaiting a return call, please email barmentrout@townofathol.org with your message and it will be delivered.”
Athol Town Manager Shaun Suhoski said that power at Town Hall was knocked out the evening of July 16, right in the middle of a Selectboard meeting. The next day, the smell of burnt electronics was noticed coming from what is called “the server room.” The damage to the equipment meant that internet access and phones were down, but were restored the following Thursday.
“That first day after the storm we were certainly impacted,” said Suhoski.
The phone system is now 75% restored, and full functionality will be back once the damaged equipment is replaced.
“We’re anxious to get back to 100% at Town Hall,” Suhoski said.
