ATHOL — “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Athol-Royalston team, and I can tell you it is an all-star team.”
With those words, newly hired Athol Royalston Regional School District Superintendent Matthew Ehrenworth introduced himself to those in attendance at the June 15 meeting of the district’s School Committee. Ehrenworth, who is leaving the post of assistant superintendent for the Blackstone-Millville district, officially takes the reins in Athol on July 1.
“I have already been working with the principals, essential administration, and I’ve been meeting with other staff,” he continued, “and I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the work that they do.
“I am looking forward to actually beginning my work on July1. But even before then, and well after then, just continuing the work that Darcy started and expanding upon it and moving the district forward.”
Ehrenworth will be replacing outgoing Superintendent Darcy Fernandes, who is leaving the post after five years with the district. A search to replace her began earlier this year after she and the School Committee failed to reach agreement on a contract extension. On May 11, Ehrenworth was chosen from a field of four finalists that also included Northampton Public Schools Superintendent John Provost; Cynthia Kennedy, the ARRSD director of intervention and acceleration; and Marlene DiLeo, superintendent of schools in Ware.
