Bulletin Board: New summer softball league seeks players

With Suburban League softball canceled this summer, an all new summer softball opportunity has formed. 

The newly formed Franklin County Summer Softball League is now accepting registrations, with the deadline to register being June 25. The games will be played at Murphy Park on Tuesday and Thursday nights, beginning July 6 and ending Aug. 19. The 10-game regular season will be followed by a single elimination playoff bracket. The league is open to any girls entering grades 8-12 in fall of 2021. 

The cost is $100, which covers umpire fees, jersey, socks and the cost of softballs. Players will be required to have their own pants and belts. Registration fees can be checks made out to Greenfield Girls Softball or paid through venmo @GreenfieldGirls-SoftballLeague. For more info, email fclsummersoftball@gmail.com.

GGSL

Lily Marciano busted out for five hits, while teammate Alaina Toothaker registered four hits to help Precision Driving School past Elks Club, 7-5, in GGSL Lil Nippers action Thursday.

Raine Wonsey and Lexi Hawkins had four hits apiece for the Elks.

Running

Northfield Summer Series

Ben Emberley won the Northfield Summer Series Road Race Thursday evening, completing the 3.3-mile course in 24 minutes, 10 seconds. He was followed by David Thomas (25:09) and Neal Gifford (25:15).

Robin McKeon (28:02) was the first female finisher, followed by Sue Belcher (30:01) and Beckley Wooster (32:02). Thirteen runners and 10 walkers completed the course.

The Northfield Summer Road Race takes place every Thursday, June through August. Race begins at 6:30 pm, starting and finishing at 105 Main Street in Northfield. Cost is $4 with $10 maximum per family.

Youth baseball

GMLB

Sean Winslow was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a triple and a double to power Liberty Tax past Fitzgerald Real Estate, 17-15, in a GMLB Single A tilt Thursday.

Liberty’s Collin Winslow had three hits, including two triples, and teammates Matan Newcomb (four hits) and Benny Thompson (three hits) also had big nights. Fitzgerald’s received offense from Ian Degen (three hits), Leo McDonald (three hits, HR), Eli Skinder (three hits) and Andrew Quintana (two hits).

■ Also in Single Al, Lucy Burnap, Xaviay Reynolds, Joe Joe Pierce and Gabe Heineman each tallied a pair of hits to help lead Bobby C’s DJ Service to a 9-6 win over Lundgren Honda on Thursday. 

Hunter Wilkins and Joshua James both went 3-for-3 for Lundgren, with Ryan Turner adding a pair of hits. 

Golf

Greenfield Elks League

Bob Ferris and Vinnie Melendez were first with 35½ points, finishing atop the Elks League at the Country Club of Greenfield on Wednesday. Second place went to Greg Call and Bob Zaikowski (33½), while two teams tied for third place with 33 points (Keith Schempp/Dave McDonald and Joe LaChance/Bill Martin). Closest to the pin at No. 5 was Joe Ruggeri at 8 feet, 1 inch.

Timmons-Messer League

Tom Almstead and Trevor Blake fired the low gross of 35 to top the Timmons-Messer League at Northfield Golf Club on Wednesday.

After a match of cards, Jeff Holmes and Rodney Ebbighausen (36) finished second. Low net winners were Jim Garanin and Andy Helgerson (27), followed by Dan Castine and Steve Helgerson (28). Almstead was closest to the pin on No. 6 (7-0) and George Northrup on No. 7 (6-1). Match medalist with 37 was Jim Cadran followed by Walt Sanieski (38).

Ashfield

In a 9-hole game in which each player threw out their worst two holes, Bev LaBelle took first in the Ashfield Community Golf Club Thursday Morning Fun League with a 28. 

Dick Cranson settled for second with a score of 29. 

Thomas Women’s League

Kim Lynch posted the low gross score of 43 during Women’s League action at the Thomas Memorial Golf Course on Wednesday. 

Robin Hartnett finished second with a gross 45, followed by Deb Cote with a gross 46.  Sue Mailloux had the low net score of 26, with Dororthy Adams and MaryEllen Fydenkevez tying for second with net scores of 28. Hartnett won closest to the pin on No. 7 with a shot 14 feet, six inches away.
