ATHOL — A dinner and comedy show will be held Saturday, June 8 to benefit Kara Maccarone of town who was seriously injured in an automobile accident on Route 2 in Gardner on Nov. 25, 2018. The event will be held from 4-10 p.m. at the Athol American Legion, 325 Pequoig Ave. Tickets are $15 per person. The 5 p.m. dinner will include spaghetti, meatballs, salads and desserts. The Comics for A Cure show starts at 7. There will also be a Chinese auction for gift cards.

The single mother of two sustained a traumatic brain injury and other injuries in the accident. She is unable to work and needs assistance with daily needs. Following the accident, Maccarone spent three days in the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) under observation at UMass, Worcester and was transferred to Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol for rehabilitation. Maccarone had to relearn how to talk and use her left arm and leg and perform daily living activities. She was discharged to her parents on Dec. 14 and needs 24-hour care. She continues to attend outpatient physical therapy to improve her mobility and strength.

According to Trooper James DeAngelis of Massachusetts State Police Media Relations, no charges have been filed because it is believed that a vehicle attempting to change lanes may have set off a series of crashes.
