ATHOL — Jon Mahony anchored the Athol varsity wrestling team at the 106-pound weight class, while Chris Waslaske anchored the team out of the 182-pound weight class throughout this year’s season.

The combo finished the wrestling season competing in the MIAA All-State Wrestling tournament this past Friday and Saturday.

Neither wrestler advanced to the New England Championship, but accomplished a hard task in qualifying for the All-State championship by placing in a series of different tournaments. At the Central Massachusetts Sectional Championship in Wayland, Mahony placed second in the 106-pound weight class, while Waslaske placed first in the 182-pound weight class. After placing in sectionals, the duo moved on to the Division III State Championship at Wakefield High School, where Mahony placed sixth and Waslaske third in their respective weight classes. Placing in the state meet allowed the two move on to all-states.

At the all-state meet, Mahony finished 0-2, losing to Nate Chandler of Newton North in the opening round, and then to Frank Foti of Shawsheen High School in the consolation round. Waslaske made it to the quarterfinals round and lost to Vinnie Holmes of Mansfield. He then lost to Danny O’Connell of Methuen in the consolation round.

The two wrestlers have plans on attending club wrestling events in the offseason, including an offseason wrestling club at Franklin Tech High School.
