One week after a drubbing of Mohawk, the Athol football team hosts Franklin Tech on Friday night.

The Eagles (1-4, 0-3 Intercounty North) have struggled this season, but are a polished team with what they do on offense.

“They are a standard I-form team,” Athol coach Bill LaRose said. “They like to run the sweep. I watched a couple of their games and they are really successful with that play.”

While Franklin Tech is more of a traditional run team, they will keep the Raiders (2-3, 1-2) off balance with quick throws such as the bubble screen out to their flankers and slot receivers.

A win last week has added a little confidence for Athol.

“They have a little pep in their step this week,” LaRose said. “We didn’t do a lot of hitting this week. We were more about assignments.”

The Red Raiders returned to form against Mohawk. The running game was explosive with Mason Barrieau breaking off big touchdown runs.

But there was something else that Franklin Tech saw on film – the play of Caleb Cox at quarterback for the Red Raiders.

Cox was composed and patient against Mohawk and threw a pair of touchdowns to Joe Gray and Dylan Castine.

The light week of practice allowed some players to heal and the team is as healthy as they have been all season.

“Our numbers are good,” LaRose said.

Franklin Tech’s lone win of the season came against Mohawk. The Eagles beat the Warriors in Week 1, 44-6.
