The U.S. Mint will begin taking orders for its one ounce palladium coin on Sept. 5. The coin will have a design similar to the 1916-45 “Mercury” head dime.

To order this coin from the mint, visit their website at, or call 1-800-USA-MINT. There is a shipping charge on every order from the mint.

The last series of the big Brimfield flea markets for this year will run from Sept. 3-7 along a mile of U.S. Route 20 in that town. There is a fee to park almost anywhere near the flea market fields, and some of them charge admission to enter. This is not the place to look for household tag sale items, but for quality antiques and collectibles. Different fields open up on different days, with a few being open only one day.

The easiest way to get to Brimfield from the North Quabbin is to take Route 32 A south from Petersham to Route 32 south in Gilbertville, then in Ware, take Route 9 east to West Brookfield. From there, take Route 19 south to Brimfield, which goes onto Route 20.

This writer has shopped at Brimfield for more than four decades, and been a vendor at some shows there for over a quarter century. While a lot of walking is involved, I have made many interesting finds over the years. Some of the items I found there have been added to my collections, while some are resold through my collectibles business.

One dealer I encountered there over 20 years ago had a bunch of postcards for sale. In the group, I found three unidentified copies of a rare postcard depicting the original Independent Liberal Church in the lost Quabbin town of Greenwich. After some negotiating, I purchased all three of them.

I used one example to illustrate the cover of my 1999 biography of Henry W. Smith, who had built the church. The other two were sold to serious Quabbin town postcard collectors for a nice profit. That is just one of many finds I have made at Brimfield over the years.
