ATHOL — The Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol invites the public to a meeting Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Athol Public Library, to learn about becoming a volunteer adult literacy tutor.
“This is a great way to help a fellow adult change their life for the better,” said Louise Doud, LVOA Coordinator.
This session will explain what it means to be a tutor and gives people a taste of what the free tutor training course will be like. Attending this session will be the ticket into a course — one starting in October, or early in the new year.
To express your interest contact Doud by phone at 978-249-5381 or email at lvoa01331@gmail.com. If leaving a message, include your phone, email and street address. LVOA’s office hours at the Athol Public Library are Tuesdays 3-5 p.m and 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursdays 1-5 p.m., and by appointment.
Make a valuable contribution to your own community and see the difference that tutoring an eager adult learner can make in your own life.
Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol provides free, private, and confidential tutoring to adults and youth ages 16 and older in basic reading and writing (BL), and in conversational English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), through the use of professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors. Students are able to learn at their own pace and in the best way for them.
LVOA provides other services such as Book Bags for Babies, a program to distribute children’s books in homemade cloth bags to parents of newborns and young ones, to encourage them to read to their children and to increase awareness of services for parents and families in the area.
LVOA is affiliated with Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts.
