ATHOL — Haley’s announces publication of “Revenge of the Untamed Magic,” a ‘tween mystery novel written and illustrated by Elizabeth Lindgren of Orange.

The second in the Sooty Wick mystery series, Revenge of the Untamed Magic features Beetle Beane, Murtha Bellwether, and Noonan Aberghast hot on the trail of an unscrupulous corporation intent on exploiting the environment. The first installment of the Sooty Wick series, “The Secret of Sooty Wick Inn,” appeared in 2018.

In conjunction with the Sooty Wick series, Athol Public Library features an exhibition of the author’s soft sculptures, many of them themed to coincide with the Sooty Wick series.

“I wanted more adventures featuring girls,” Lindgren said, “so I started writing the Sooty Wick series. I would like to encourage young adult readers to take interest in history and nature — to make it fun for them to get involved.

“I undertook writing the Sooty Wick series in the spirit of everything else I do,” she added. “I like to do creative things, and the novels keep me occupied.” The author said she also enjoys gardening, including creating installations of plants and statuary.

“I also design and sew stuffed fabric dragons, pixies, sea horses, and fish,” Lindgren added. “I have a three-quarter-life-sized soft-sculpture friend I call Granny who sometimes joins me on FaceBook.” Lindgren said that each book has an individual FaceBook site.

Lindgren’s colonial-era home in Orange shares features with Sooty Wick Inn, she said, and the surroundings offer observable areas for fictional settings, including hayfields, trees and ponds.

Lindgren studied for four years at the Art Institute of Boston.

Revenge of the Untamed Magic and The Secret of Sooty Wick Inn are available at Third Thursday Street Fairs in Orange, Petersham Country Store and the Petersham Art Center, New Salem General Store, Wendell General Store, Mim’s Market in Northfield, and Haley’s in Athol. The books are also available online.
