PETERSHAM — The Petersham Art Center has scheduled four classes in November. Participants will be able to learn new artistic skills and find ideas for holiday gift giving, or benefit for their own personal enhancement.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, from 6:30-9 p.m., artist Mathilde Duffy of Petersham will teach a class for adults on the techniques and skills of colored pencil drawing. Duffy is an award-winning artist who has been teaching for more than 30 years. One of her specialties is creating softly shaded and nuanced colored pencil drawings. Using many different pencils, blending tools, different types of paper, special effects, and problem solving techniques, each student will be assisted to find the techniques that best match with their own creations. Duffy will teach the colored pencil class for children on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6:30-9 p.m.

Marcia Berkall will present a class on making paper clay ornaments on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. She is a well-known artist who maintains Marcia Berkall Art in Athol, creating intricate wood carvings, sculptures, and encaustic designs, as well as other art and craft forms. In this class, Berkall will teach how to use paper clay to make cookie cutter and free-form holiday ornaments. The clay takes a few days to dry so the artist will demonstrate how to make the ornaments, then the student can paint them at home to create family heirlooms and holiday gifts.

On Saturday, Nov.16, 1-3 p.m., artist Jen Niles of Paxton will teach her popular class, Paint Your Pet holiday ornaments. Niles teaches community art classes and displays her bold and colorful artwork in many area venues, including the Petersham Art Center. For this class, she will help students to paint whimsical portraits of their pets on wooden ornament shapes. There will also be mini 4” x 4” canvas boards available for those who prefer a portrait type painting over an ornament.

All classes take place at the Petersham Art Center, 8 North St., off Route 32, near Petersham Common. There is a fee for each class.
