BOSTON – With Memorial Day fast approaching, Senator Anne M. Gobi announced Thursday that the Office of the Adjutant General is currently accepting applications for the Massachusetts Medal of Liberty.

A heart-shaped honor symbolic of the Purple Heart, it is given to the next of kin of service men or women from the Commonwealth killed in action or who died in service while in a designated combat area in the line of duty or who died as a result of wounds received in action.

The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty is open to all branches of the service and is awarded in the name of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Commander-in-Chief of the Commonwealth to any Massachusetts serviceman or woman killed in action or who died as a result of wounds received in action.

Surviving family members requesting retroactive awards of the Medal of Liberty must apply for the award through the Office of the Adjutant General. The application is available online or by request. Your local Veterans’ Service Officer can help with the application process.

Following a review and validation of records, those next of kin of Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force and Coast Guard members so qualified are awarded the Massachusetts Medal of Liberty by the Office of The Adjutant General, Massachusetts National Guard.

In the event that a request is made to award the Medal and the award criteria cannot be validated due to lack of military records, or service connected loss cannot be determined as noted in military records, surviving family members must provide official documentation.

For more information contact Senator Gobi’s office at 617-722-1540.
