PHILLIPSTON — Author Carla Charter will present a program, “Call to Freedom-Abolition in the Greater Gardner Area,” on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in the vestry of the Congregational Church, on The Common.

Charter has worked hard to uncover the names of the people in this area who played an active role in helping fugitive slaves make their way to freedom. Many worked behind the scenes to support that cause and some even hosted runaways in their homes. Some of these people became members of anti-slavery societies that were active in paving the way to freeing the slaves.

Charter’s research has opened windows to the past and it is all documented in the book she wrote. This free program will be hosted by the Historical Society of Phillipston which welcomes everyone to attend. For more information call 978-939-5656.
