WINCHENDON — Recently, members of the Winchendon and Belchertown Police Departments visited YOU, Inc.’s Cottage Hill Academy in Baldwinville for a Police Appreciation Barbecue hosted by Cottage Hill staff, with assistance from the youth in their care.

Under beautiful, sunny skies the police officers and their service dogs, including members of the “Houndsmen” search team, led K-9 demonstrations that showcased the dogs’ special training and roles in their respective departments.

Winchendon officer and handler James Wironen and his German Shepherd Clyde – along with Belchertown officer Adam Broughman and his Dutch Shepherd Theia and Belgian Malinois Apache – explained and demonstrated the dogs’ abilities to detect narcotics, assist in patrols, and scent and search for missing persons. The dogs were rewarded with gift baskets of blankets and toys made and bought by Cottage Hill youth, who also took the time to bake special cupcakes with paw prints for the festivities.

Cottage Hill Academy works closely with the Winchendon PD, including Officer Wironen and Lieutenant Kevin Wolski, along with many other local officers who thoughtfully support their work and the youth in care at Cottage Hill. The program is grateful for their strong working relationships with the Templeton and Baldwinville Police Departments, and for those departments’ ongoing support.

Across the agency and at Cottage Hill Academy, the staff are committed to maintaining positive relationships with local police departments and first responders. At Cottage Hill, planning for the holiday activities with the officers has already begun, including hosting holiday meals with them on the campus, and assisting with the departments’ toy drives.
