Common

WENDELL — Meet Village Neighbors outside for a music moment on the Wendell Common. Doug Tanner and the Wranglers return from Volunteer Appreciation Day to play again, Wednesday, July 21, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; rain date, July 22.

Friday: Music in the park

ORANGE — The Orange Community Band, under the direction of Stephanie Parker, concludes its abbreviated summer season on the bandstand in Butterfield Park on Friday, July 23. Concerts this year begin at 7 p.m. and last approximately one hour, with no intermission. A special feature of this final concert is the presentation of John R. Tandy Memorial Scholarships to six area students. This is the 19th year that the band has presented scholarships to students who have a special connection to music in their lives.

Some of the selections being considered for this concert include Sinatra in Concert, Beach Boys, Frozen, Carousel, Lion King, and What a Wonderful World. Each concert begins with the National Anthem and includes several marches, as well as pop and show tunes.

On Friday July 30, Marty’s Reminisce orchestra will perform music from the ’40s, ’50s and more on the bandstand.

Concert sponsors for the season include American Legion Post 172, Witty’s Funeral Home, the Lyman and Kilhart families, and the Perkins family in memory of Freeland, Nursie, Tom and John, and our newest sponsor, the John Marsh Howe Family. The band has also received funds from the New Salem Academy Trustees for music and equipment.

Friday: Annual MothBall

ATHOL — Dave Small, President of the Athol Bird and Nature Club, invites members and friends to “the infamous ‘MothBall,’” Friday, July 23, 9 p.m. Register with Dave at Dave@atholbirdclub.org.”

July 25: Guided fern walk

ATHOL — On Sunday, July 25, 2 to 4 p.m. the Athol Bird and Nature Club is sponsoring a guided fern walk led by Randy Stone, Pioneer Valley Fern Society, at the Bearsden Conservation Area.

Explore this well-known site, focusing on how to easily identify a dozen of our common local ferns. Wear clothing appropriate for poison ivy, insects including ticks, and muddy ground in some areas.

Moderate level hike. If not fully vaccinated, please wear a mask.

Directions: Meet in parking lot for Bearsden Conservation area, at the end of Bearsden Road in Athol (opposite the hospital).

Pre-registration not required. Rain cancels. Free.

July 25: Quabbin Community Band Concert

BARRE — Head on over to South Barre Common Sunday, July 25, for 6 p.m., as the Quabbin Community Band performs their fifth outdoor concert of the summer season at the beautiful Nornay Park. The public is invited to attend and enjoy this wonderful evening of music for free, with donations graciously accepted. Unlike past years, this event does not have a rain location because of the current pandemic protocols. Concerts will continue to run each Sunday through and including Aug. 15.

July 25: Petersham Brass Band
performs

PETERSHAM — The Petersham Brass Band will perform on Sunday, July 25, at 7 p.m. on Petersham Common. Other concert dates will include Aug. 1. The Band will also perform on Sunday, Sept. 5. All concerts will be held rain or shine as the band will move into the Town Hall in the event of inclement weather.

July 26: Open house at the YMCA in Orange

ORANGE — The Athol Area YMCA invites you for join them for an Open House at 131 West Main St., the Orange Innovation Center, Monday, July 26, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “Grab a friend, family member, spouse or coworker and work out for free.” Meet their personal trainer, wellness coach and dietitian. Find out more information about Group Fitness Classes starting in august and group training starting in September.
