ATHOL – The countdown has begun for the number of shopping days left before Christmas and for Dec. 14 when Santa Claus and his elves make a special visit to families in Athol.

For more than 70 years the Athol Santa Fund has been sponsored by the Athol Daily News, bringing toys and joy to thousands of area children. The toys are purchased through donations that are collected throughout the year. Also supporting the project is the North Quabbin detachment of the Marine Corps League with Toys for Tots collection boxes set up at area businesses.

The Athol Santa Fund has been in a transitional period since a few years ago when the Athol Lions Club was asked by then Athol Daily News publisher Richard Chase if the club would be willing to take over managing the community project. The club voted unanimously in favor of it. Athol Lion Kimberly Emond replaced longtime project chair Lisa Duran who was retiring from the position and who stayed on long enough to help Emond and Lions members learn the ropes. “The Lions have been slowly taking it over,” Emond said. Donations will be handled by the Athol Lions Club.

Families can still sign up for toy deliveries at the Athol Daily News front office, 225 Exchange St., until Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Current proof of residency and a photo ID are required.

People who will be picking up toys will receive a call from Emond with a designated time and place.

For those who would like to contribute to the Athol Santa Fund, a donation station has been set up at the business of Athol Lion David Flint at Flint’s Garage Sales (not the repair side), 990 South Main St., Athol. Donations can be dropped off Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Checks for donations can be made out to “Athol Santa Fund” and mailed to Athol Santa Fund, c/o Athol Lions Club, P.O. Box 293, Athol, MA 01331.

On delivery day, Santa’s helpers are asked to meet at the Athol American Legion Post 102, 325 Pequoig Ave., by 8:40 a.m.
