Dining for Hunger event to benefit local veterans

ATHOL — Dining for Hunger will hold its second annual Funny for Food comedy show and meat raffle from 8 to 10 p.m., Friday, May 17, at the Athol American Legion, E.H. Phillips Post 102, 325 Pequoig Ave. Doors open at 7 o’clock.

This year, Dining for Hunger is raising money for three organizations that assist food insecure veterans and their families: The Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center, Inc. 268 Central St, Gardner which provides food baskets for 200 veterans each month, including the communities of Athol and Orange; the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 24, and the Franco-American War Veterans, both in Leominster. These groups provide gift cards and food baskets to veterans in need and their families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.

According to MVOC Executive Director Charles A. Murphy, there are more than 1,200 veterans living in Athol and Orange; MVOC assists approximately 100 of these veterans.

Tickets are $15 for individuals or $125 for a table of 10, and are available at the Athol American Legion, the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center. Interested residents can also leave a message for Dining for Hunger on Facebook or call 978-870-3476.
