Athol to honor its veterans on Monday

ATHOL — Memorial Day services will be held Monday, May 27 starting with a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony conducted by the commanders of service organizations as follows:

8:45 a.m. — VVA Park on Starrett Avenue;

9 — Phillips Park, across from the uptown common;

9:15 — VFW Park, adjacent to the Athol Area YMCA;

9:45 — Units and parade participants will assemble around the flagpole at Silver Lake Cemetery and ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m.

The program is as follows:

The opening prayer will be offered by Bryan Lagimoniere, Deacon, North Quabbin Catholic Community.

The flag raising ceremony will be conducted by the following organizations: Disabled American Veterans Chapter 46; AMVETS Post 793; American Legion Post 102; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 650; Pequoig Detachment 1168 Marine Corps League; Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 340.

The Athol High School/Middle School Band will play the National Anthem during the flag raising.

The Salute to the Flag will be led by Will Rivera, Commander of the Disabled AMerican Veterans Chapter 46.

The parade Grand Marshal will be Alfred LaFlamme, U.S. Army, WWII; Elwin Deveneau, U.S. Air Force, Korea.

“General Logan’s Memorial Day Order” will be read, followed by the Roll of Honor. The number of deceased veterans from all wars who are at rest in Athol cemeteries will be announced by various persons.

Guest speaker will be Nancy Ross, U.S. Navy, Chair of the Women Veterans Committee, DAV Dept. of Massachusetts.

American Legion Auxiliary members will place a wreath, while the Americal Legion Firing Squad fires a gun salute, followed by the playing of “Taps” by a band member.

The benediction will be offered by Deacon Bryan Lagimoniere.

The parade will form according to the line of march and proceed down Silver Lake Street to Crescent Street. There will be a brief stop at the bridge over the Millers River where the Anchor Wreath will be thrown into the river to honor veterans lost at sea, followed by a gun salute. The parade will continue down Main Street to Athol Veterans Park on the corner of Main and Exchange streets for the conclusion of the program.

The final ceremony at the Athol Veterans Park will be: opening prayer, Athol Veterans organizations will raise the flag while the band plays the National Anthem. There will be a salute to the flag, guest speaker, Grand Marshal will be introduced, the wreath will be placed, followed by a gun salute and playing of “Taps.”

The program will conclude with a closing prayer. Refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 46 to all participants at the American Legion Hall on the corner of Exchange Street and Pequoig Avenue. Attendees are reminded that the Exchange Street bridge is closed to all traffic.

In the case of inclement weather, there will be no parade. Ceremonies will be held in Memorial Hall at the town hall at 11 a.m.
