Village School open house Nov. 21

ROYALSTON — The Village School is hosting an open house for parents and children on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon.  Attendees can see classrooms, meet teachers, talk to current parents and students, meet alumni and learn about the engaging and challenging curriculum. There will also be information on the admissions process, financial aid, and openings in preschool, kindergarten and 1st through 5th grade, both for this year and next.

From 10 to 11:45 a.m., children can join in arts and crafts and science activities in the classrooms. At 11:45 a.m. everyone will gather together to meet with school director Risa Richardson. Coffee, tea and light refreshments are served throughout the morning.

School Director Risa Richardson, asked recently about how to encourage children, said, “Our job is one of gentle encouragement in all things: washing dishes, writing stories, learning soccer skills, and learning a musical instrument, among many others. And our encouragement is especially important in those moments when a child struggles, to help him to see the step by step process (‘What is your next step here? What do you know already?’) so he can do the work himself and surmount the current difficulty. Recent studies show that children who struggle and make efforts and don’t give up, succeed in all measurements of success, be it improved grades, self- confidence, leadership or social dexterity. And once a child gains the confidence that comes from making efforts and succeeding, he has great internal support for all of life’s upcoming efforts. Here at the Village School, we help children find their own courage to take on all challenges, big and small.”

The Village School is an affordable, independent school for children from preschool through the 6th grade. The Village School is located on the Common in Royalston, off Route 68, across from the post office. For more information, call 978 249-3505, or go to www.villageschoolma.org.
