Raymond W. Smith

ORANGE — Raymond Warren Smith, 79, died peacefully in his home early on Jan. 6, 2016, with his family at his side.

He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Carol A. (Fournier) Smith. For more than half a century, Ray and Carol built a rich life together that was centered on raising their children, Tracey M. Hachey and Dr. Joshua B. Smith.

An Air Force veteran, Ray was an exceptionally talented woodworker who specialized in reconstructions of 18th century furniture and houses, with much of the work being done by hand. Ray possessed an avid interest in education; he continued to study a number of subjects almost to the last. Needless to say, conversations with him were never dull. Ray worked hard, created countless beautiful and enduring things, and was a true friend to those who were lucky enough to have known him.

He is survived by his children; their spouses, Mike Hachey and Morgan Woroner; his grandson, Andrew Hachey; and two siblings, Dorothy Cloukey and Luther Smith.

Ray was an incredibly kind person with so many talents — he will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

As winter was far from Ray’s favorite season, the family plans to hold a memorial service in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA.

Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, is directing the arrangements.
