YORK BEACH, Maine — Diane “Dinah” Anderson passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all that knew her. Known for her kindness and sense of humor she will be sorely missed by many.
Dinah was an avid gardener and a longtime member of the Old York Garden Club and served on its board for many years. She was also a longtime member of a local Ikebana group. Her artistry and love of plants was reflected in her beautiful garden, houseplants, and perpetual flower arrangements.
As a great lover of literature, Dinah was a longtime member of a York Adult Education book group that met once a month over many years.
In earlier years she worked as a teacher’s aide at York Elementary School and was the co-owner of a fabulous handmade lampshade business, known as the "Shady Ladies." She was also co-founder and treasurer of Loftware Inc., a software development company that began in York, Maine.
Dinah was born in Athol, Mass., on May 1, 1929. She attended Athol High School and Mt. Holyoke College, graduating with a degree in Comparative Religions and Psychology.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter R. “Andy” Anderson; her daughter, Amy Anderson; her parents, Dana F. Higgins and Dorothy Thompson Higgins Lawton; and her brother, Dana Higgins.
Dinah is survived by her sister, Deborah Hergenrother, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and her four loving children and their families, Lis Anderson and her partner, Steve Horn, of Kittery, Maine, Wendy Anderson and her partner, Darrick Nielson, of Big Fork, Mont., Eric Anderson and his wife, Janet Frost Anderson of Rockport, Maine, and Dana Anderson and his wife, Lisa Anderson, of York, Maine; eight grandchildren, Erin, Travis, Jesse, Erica, Lara, Sydney, Gage and Grace; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Her family is eternally grateful to Dr. Elena Theodosiou and the entire loving staff at the hematology and oncology department at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Dinah to any of the following associations that touched her life: York Hospital Hospice, York Visiting Nurses Association, Make-A-Wish Maine, or the York Public Library.
