Daniel E. Mead

ATHOL — A memorial and celebration of life service, along with military honors, was held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange for Daniel E. Mead, 56, of Park Street, who died at home following an illness on Oct. 12.

Dan’s wife, Susan Chadsey Mead, welcomed everyone and turned the service over to Rob Roberts, who led the recital of the lotus sutra. Following the Buddhist chants, Susan’s children, Alex Chadsey and John Chadsey, continued with prayers and reflections. The closing prayer, “I Am With You Still,” was read by Jordan MacRae. Military honors were provided by the United States Army Honor Guard who performed “Taps” and folded the American flag and presented it to Dan’s wife, Susan. Following the services, a reception was held at the home of Eric Carron in Warwick.

Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, was honored with directing the arrangements.

ATHOL — Dan lost his long battle with end stage liver disease on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017. He was able to pass at home surrounded by loved ones as per his wishes. Dan’s last months were spent joyously enjoying visits from family, friends, and new friends from his hospice team.

Dan was a cheerful soul who embraced life with gusto. He made it his mission to make the people around him happy, including many jokes.

Dan’s passions in life were many and varied. He was never happier than when he could be around his friends and family. He loved to ride his Harley and spent many a day with his wife, Susan, and friends navigating the roads of New England. Dan also loved sports, specifically the Patriots and the Red Sox.

Dan married his wife Susan 10 years ago after a two-year courtship. On their first date Dan had declared he would marry her. More than a little skeptical she had replied she would never marry again, as she had no time for that. In the end Dan’s determination won her over.

Dan’s marriage to Sue brought five children, five grandchildren and a great-grandchild into Dan’s life. Though Dan had no biological children he felt blessed for the big family he married into. Five years ago Dan was able to welcome his great-granddaughter, whom he nick-named ‘Lilums.’ He greatly enjoyed her visits.

Dan will be greatly missed by his extensive family and many friends. He was preceded by his father Ernest W. Mead; his grandparents, Dana and Frances Bogart, and Donald and Stella Mead; his aunts, Donna Mead Margaritas and Trinka Bogart Lynch; and father-in-law, Lawrence Mounce.

He will be missed by his wife, Susan Chadsey Mead; his mother, Lynne Bogart Mead; his sister and brother-in-law, Tracey Mead MacRae and Steven MacRae; sister-in-law, Janet Finnimore; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael Finnimore and Bo Kim; brother-in-law, Ian Finnimore; mother-in-law, Jane Mounce; his aunts, Ruthann Bogart Gold and husband Steven Gold, and Anne Parker Bogart; uncles, Dana Bogart and partner Jane Mitchell; his nephew, Jordan MacRae and nieces, Kelley MacRae Garcia, Sara MacRae Wright and Molly MacRae; his stepchildren, Sarah Carron, Eric Carron, Megan Chadsey, Heather Chadsey, and Alex Chadsey; his grandchildren, Christopher Mabey, Ashley Mabey, Jonathon Oakes, Jakob Carron, and Alyssa Pratt; and his great-granddaughter, Lilyanne Mabey, as well as great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange.

At 11 a.m., on Oct. 21, military honors will be performed, followed by formal services, all at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange.
