ORANGE — Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange for Catherine N. (Shaw) Fifield, 87, of East Main Street, who died Dec. 8, at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Rev. Mark Bariloni of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church officiated and words of remembrance were offered by family and friends. Interment will take place in the spring of 2018 at the Erving Center Cemetery.
Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange, was honored with directing the arrangements.
ORANGE — Catherine N. (Shaw) Fifield, 87, of East Main Street, died Friday evening, Dec. 8, 2017, at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Born in Altona, N.Y., on July 17, 1930, she was a daughter of the late William and Dora (Baker) Shaw and grew up on the family farm in Altona and graduated from Altona Central School.
In 1942, Catherine won first place for a turnip in the Altona Central School Fair. Catherine was lucky again in 1949 to place second for an essay on highway safety (ironically, she never would drive) that was sponsored by radio station WEAV in New York.
On March 27, 1950, Catherine married Floyd R. Fifield and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage until his death on May 27, 2003. They moved from New York to Orange in 1951.
Catherine was a production worker at the Erving Paper Mill for close to 40 years before retiring in 1992.
Known as an extreme shopper, Catherine loved exploring stores for bargains. She also enjoyed flowers.
Survivors include her sons, Floyd R. Fifield Jr. of Athol and William “Bill” Fifield of Orange; three grandchildren, Nicole Truehart, Jonathan Fifield, and Cody Fifield; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Madison; sisters, Eleanor Ratta and Mary Page, both of Vermont; brothers, Harold Shaw and Robert Shaw, both of New York; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, Catherine was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Moulton in 1999.
A calling hour will be held on Wednesday night, Dec. 13, from 6 to 7 p.m., at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., Orange.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange, with Rev. Mark Bariloni of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church officiating.
Interment will be in the spring of 2018 at the Erving Center Cemetery.
