John A. Blazejewski
NORTHFIELD — John Andrew Blazejewski, 87, of Capt. Beers Plain Rd., Northfield, also known as “Long John,” sadly departed this earth on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015. He was born in Holyoke on May 31, 1928, the son of John and Karolina (Dziok) Blazejewski.
He attended Orange (Mass.) High School, was a standout basketball player and graduated in 1947. He attended Becker Junior College on the G.I. Bill after serving in the U.S. Army.
He married Jessie Whyte in 1955 and was happily married to her for 47 years until her passing. He worked for A&P grocery stores for 40 years. John was an avid hunter for his entire life and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
He was considered by many to be the best deer and rabbit hunter they had ever known. He was in the woods at sunrise and out at dark and was at his happiest when he was in the woods with a gun in his hands and a beagle sounding off in the distance. He hunted in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Wyoming, and Alaska, where he scored a 1,500-pound bull moose with a 58-1/2-inch rack.
In concert with that hunting passion, he competed in field trials with his beagles, and was an accredited AKC licensed field trial judge. He had a field champion of his own named Bee Line and raised and bred beagles for most of his adult life. He competed in field trials all over New England and was a charter member of the Millers River Beagle Club. He was also a member of the Franklin County League of Sportsmen and a competitive trap and skeet shooter. He scored 25, 50, and 75 straight and once defeated the New York and New Hampshire champions in a shoot-off. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Elks, the American Legion and the Northfield Council on Aging. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Northfield. He was a good friend of Bill W.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Blazejewski of Greenfield; his son, Andrew and wife Donna of Falls Church, Va.; his sister, Edwina Zebrowski of Northampton; grandsons, John, Drew and Anthony; and nieces and nephews, Karen Matherson, Katherine Klepacki, Karoline Kenney, Kristen and Peter Zebrowski, Ann Leuschner, and Brian Blazejewski.
Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 28, from the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield, at 8:15 a.m., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9, at St. Patrick’s Church Main St., Northfield. The Rev. Thomas Lisowski, pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be Sunday, Dec. 27, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the funeral home.
