Ask Twin City Paws
Dear Twin City Paws,
One family member has allergies, so we are concerned about adopting a dog. What would be the best kind of dog for us?
— Wanting to Adopt
Dear Wanting to Adopt,
You didn’t specify size, so here’s some information to help you make an informed choice. Bear in mind that most people are allergic to pet dander — not the fur — or pet saliva. So frequent baths for your dog, whatever the breed background — will also help. Small dog breeds that are recommended (because their coats are easy to maintain) are Bichon Frise, Maltese, Labradoodle, and many of the Terrier breeds. Larger breeds would be Afghan Hound, Giant Schnauzer, Irish Water Spaniel, and Portuguese Water Dog (which the Obamas selected for a White House dog, as daughter Malia has allergies). Please bear in mind that we have seen all of these breeds turn up at shelters. Consider fostering a dog from a shelter, to see how your family member can cope with allergies. Many shelters welcome families willing to open their homes to a shelter pet.
