Local recap: Mahar girls' earn two key victories

Mahar 37 Belchertown 36
BELCHERTOWN — The Mahar Senators scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to move past the Belchertown Orioles 37-36 on Tuesday night. Jazmyn Vautour led the Senators with 15 points while Hannah Paul scored 11. The Senators moved to 5-5 with the win.
Mahar went up 8-6 at the end of the first quarter but were down 13-10 at halftime. Belchertown increased their lead to six at 24-18 by the end of the fourth quarter but the Senators outscored the Orioles 19-12 in the fourth quarter.
Mahar 61 Turners Falls 45
ORANGE — The Mahar Senators earned a well-respected win on Thursday night against the No. 19 ranked Turners Falls Indians, outscoring the Indians 20-3 in the third quarter to get above .500 for the first time this season. The Senators improved to 6-5 with the win while the Indians fell to 6-3.
Jazmyn Vautour paced the Senators with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists. Hannah Paul scored 14 points while Kianna Reilly scored 10 points and Tori Tenney added 12 rebounds. Sam Rowe added eight points for the Senators while Delaney Parker added seven.
Mahar held the 17-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. They led 25-24 at halftime. The Senators then went on to outscore Turners Falls 20-3 in the third quarter and were outscored 18-16 in the fourth quarter for the 61-45 Mahar final. The Senators now have one week off before traveling to Southwick to take on the Southwick Rams at 7 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Belchertown 39 Mahar 33
BELCHERTOWN — The Mahar Senators outrebounded and had more scoring opportunities than the Belchertown Orioles on Tuesday night but couldn’t find the basket in their first loss of the year. Mary Anne Prescott scored 13 points for the Senators while Courtney Paige scored nine points. Emily Paluk added five points while Elina Halper-Gordon and Abbey Henne each added two. Makayla Matherin and Siobhan Davis each had one point.
Mahar 36 Turners Falls 22
ORANGE — The Mahar Senators used their defensive prowess to their advantage and held Turners Falls scoreless in the second quarter and built a 22-8 halftime lead en route to a 36-22 victory on Thursday night. Courtney Paige led Mahar with 11 points. Elina Halpern-Gordon added seven points while Jordan Fournier had six points, Mary Anne Prescott five points, Abby Henne three points and Siobhan Davis and Makayla Matherin two points.
MS boys’ basketball
Athol 38 Smith Academy 32
HATFIELD — The ARMS boys’ basketball team led 19-16 at the half and held on to win 38-32 on the road on Thursday afternoon. The team had a good day at the foul line with Connor Mahony scoring a team high 10 points. Dilan Fountain scored nine points for Athol as well while Vinnie Gordon scored seven, Aiden Walsh five, Quentin Polana three and Angel Castillo two. Lucas Saisa and Conall Tontodonato played well defensively for ARMS.
