Mailloux, Wrigley tie for 1st as week’s top point-getters

ATHOL — Brennan Mailloux and Destiny Wrigley are two strong shooters finding success in their senior season.

Those moments of shooting hoops paid off for the duo in Week 9 of the high school hoops season, as they finished tied for first in the points column this week.

Mailloux finished with 39 total points, scoring 14 against Mohawk Trail Regional, 14 against Belchertown, and 11 against Turners Falls. Mailloux has 170 total points on the year and at least 11 points in seven games. Mailloux last finished in the top five point-getters in Week 4, dumping in 16 points. He also finished first in Week One, with 21 points.

Wrigley also finished the week with 39 points, notching 19 against Hopkins Academy, eight against Frontier Regional and 12 against Narragansett Regional. It is the second week in a row that Wrigley has finished in first or tied for first for top point-getter, as she came in first in Week 8 with 52 points. Wrigley has scored 91 points in the last two weeks and 168 points so far this season.

Sam Paul finished third with 34 points. He has now finished in the top five point-getters six times, tied with Athol’s Mark Ferrari for the most of any player from Athol and Mahar Regional high schools. Paul put up 10 points against Mohawk Trail Regional, nine against Belchertown and 15 against Turners Falls. He has now scored a season-high 224 points on the year, and 539 in his career.

Fourth place this week goes to Mahar’s Matt Jenks. A senior playing basketball for the first time on the varsity team in his high school year, Jenks has stepped up in the second half of the season for the Senators. He’s found composure and confidence underneath the hoop for the Senators, which led to 28 points in week nine. Jenks finished in the top five for the third time this season and first time he finished outside of fifth place. Jenks scored six points against Mohawk Trail Regional, 14 against Belchertown and eight against Turners Falls.

Fifth place goes to Ferrari, who scored 26 points in Week 9. Ferrari has finished fourth three times now, second twice and fifth once. Ferrari scored 19 points against Narragansett Regional and seven against Smith Academy.
