ATHOL — The Athol High School boys’ varsity basketball team came out strong in the first half but couldn’t maintain the pace, losing to Lee High School, 57-46, Friday night.

The Red Raiders fell to 2-17 on the season. They will play one last game tonight against the Greenfield Green Wave in Greenfield at 7 p.m. Lee improved to 4-10 on the year.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 12-10 lead and led 32-27 by halftime. They were outscored 17-9 in the third quarter and 13-5 in the fourth for the 57-46 final.

“(Friday night’s effort) was the best half of basketball we’ve played all year,” said Athol coach Dan Bevis. “Unfortunately, we ran out of gas in the second half and never could recover.”

Freshman Noah Pottinger led the team with 14 points. Mark Ferrari contributed 12, while Justin Blake scored eight points, Bryce King five points, Evan Saisa, Colby Mason and Maysin Tarbell two each.

“Very pleased with how our guys competed for a majority of the game,” said Bevis. “The effort and energy was there.”
